The redwood gallery was established in 2006 by Julie Boaler and Victor Farlie. We are based at Lichen House, Farm lane, Ditchling, East Sussex. Julie and Victor are the company directors of redwood gallery Limited.
Following a long standing interest in California - we were married in Yosemite, and as private collectors of black and white photography, we took the decision to establish the gallery. California is very important in the history of photography. Home to the early 'pictorialists' of the 19th century, world famous photographers such as Edward Weston and Ansel Adams, and now a new generation of outstanding photographers who continue to broaden the range, and quality of images that are available. Our focus is to bring this to a mainstream British audience offering a unique portfolio of classic images. Compared to the UK collecting photography in the USA is well established. America hosts many of the worlds leading 'fine art' photographic galleries, Museums and private collections. Here in the UK we see photography becoming an increasingly popular and collectible art form. Our aim to establish long term relationships with West Coast photographers introducing and promoting them to a UK audience by exploring the commercial opportunities with electronic and physical galleries. We believe the internet has changed the business model of selling art forever - by enabling the artist to sell directly to the customer with relatively low overheads. The old galleries had high overheads to support a physical location - the new online gallery focuses on supporting the photographer, maximising customer reach and developing the marketplace. Our philosophy here at the gallery is to generate more interest in photographs with high levels of originality, professional craft and image content. Our overall approach is to focus on getting the balance right between aesthetics and value for money. The collection will grow in response to our understanding of the market and customer demand. Photography can be an important medium for identifying and raising open questions about the world we live in. The gallery will aim to highlight the complex relationship of nature to human kind, the reality of a so-called 'idealised' landscape, and the impact technology has in developing photography as an art form. We enjoy looking at and discussing photographs. We hope you do too! Our membership and newsletter are designed to create an informed audience for our gallery. It is easy to join. We have a collector's guide to photography entitled 'How to collect' to assist you in making a purchase on our site. Please contact us directly to discuss any aspect of the gallery, individual photographers and our services.
